Whether you're getting ready to book that summer vacation, or someone who is constantly on the go for business, we all want to travel smart and healthy. But, sometimes that's easier said than done. With hectic schedules, unexpected airport layovers, and emergencies, making good choices can sometimes be a challenge. But there is a simple solution...a little planning and preparation.
Bringing your food with you will keep you feeling your best in all travel situations!
Start by pre-packing snacks for your trip.
Great snack options are easy to eat fruits and vegetables.
Pick fruits and vegetables that travel well and don't require much effort to prepare or clean up.
Some of my favorites include:
Carrot sticks, celery, cucumber, sugar snap peas, green beans, and peppers.
Choose fruits that come in their own convenient packaging and don't require refrigeration.
Apples, pears, bananas, grapes, and kiwi are super easy!
For salty or crunchy snacks opt for healthy substitutes like kale chips (Rhythm Superfoods), seaweed, raw nuts, rice cakes, flax or seed crackers (Mary's Gone Crackers), air-popped popcorn, or roasted edamame. Portion ahead of time into ziploc baggies so you always have an easy, delicious, and satisfying snack on hand.
If sweets are your thing, make your own trail mix:
1 cup 100% whole-grain cereal
1 Tbsp nuts (almonds, walnuts)
1 Tbsp unsulfured dried fruit (raisins, cranberries)
1 Tbsp cacao nibs or dark chocolate chips (70%)
or choose
Dark chocolate (70%)
Fresh fruit
Dried figs
Dates
For protein: pack organic hard boiled eggs, canned wild salmon or tuna (in water), whole food or raw protein bars (Simple Squares, Raw Revolution, LARABAR) or jerky (grass-fed beef or turkey, salmon). Make a sandwich with nut butter packets (almond, pecan, walnut-Artisana brand is great ) and sliced apple or crackers.
Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated on the plane is important because the dry air leads to dehydration, which can make you tired and cause headaches. You'll feel refreshed when you arrive at your destination, and be less likely to be tempted by airport treats if you stay hydrated throughout the flight. We often reach for food when we are really just thirsty.
Remember, with a little planning and preparation, you can stay healthy and nourished wherever your travels take you.
