Why I’m Gluten-Free (and when I

recommend it to my clients)

Hi Friends,

If you’ve been in the wellness space for more than five minutes, you’ve probably heard people debate gluten until they’re blue in the face. Is it harmless? Is it the villain?

For me, the decision to drop gluten wasn’t about following a trend—it was a personal health necessity.

My Story with Hashimoto’s Disease

Twelve years ago, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. When I was looking for real, sustainable ways to manage my symptoms and protect my body, removing gluten was one of the single most effective shifts I made.

Why? Because when we’re dealing with inflammatory conditions, gluten is often one of the biggest culprits.

Through molecular mimicry (where the protein structure of gluten closely resembles thyroid tissue) and its tendency to increase intestinal permeability (leaky gut), gluten can trigger the immune system to stay on high alert.

Research and clinical outcomes show that for many people with thyroid autoimmunity, removing gluten can dramatically reduce thyroid antibodies and improve symptoms by up to 50% or more.

Why I Recommend It for Some Clients, But Not All

Does that mean everyone needs to go gluten-free?

Not necessarily.

In my coaching practice, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. If a client comes to me with:

  • An active autoimmune condition (like Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.)

  • Chronic digestive issues or systemic inflammation

  • Unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or joint pain

...then an elimination period with gluten is often one of our first strategic moves. But if you have a healthy gut, balanced energy, and no inflammatory markers, quality whole-grain gluten can certainly have a place in your diet.

A Great First Step (But Not the Final Destination)

Here’s the truth: going gluten-free is a powerful first step, but it’s not a magic eraser.

Managing an autoimmune condition or chronic inflammation is a puzzle. Removing gluten takes down the "heat" in the room, but we still have to look at stress levels, sleep hygiene, nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar balance, and environmental toxins to build true, lasting health.

How to Navigate the Gluten-Free World (Without Getting Tricked)

If you're thinking about trying a gluten-free lifestyle, here are three golden rules to keep in mind:

  1. Beware the "Gluten-Free Junk Food" Trap: Just because a box of cookies or chips says "Gluten-Free" doesn't mean it’s healthy. Many store-bought GF products are loaded with refined starches and excess sugars that spike your blood sugar just as fast.

  2. Stick to Whole Foods First: Build your meals around foods that are naturally gluten-free—vibrant vegetables, grass-fed proteins, healthy fats, fruit, and sweet potatoes.

  3. Check the Labels: Gluten sneaks into hidden places like soy sauce, salad dressings, canned soups, and even certain spices. Read ingredients, not just front-of-package marketing.
