What Your Food Cravings Are Telling You

 

Food cravings are something most of us have everyday. But what do they mean and what are they telling us about our health? Many of us don't pay attention to our cravings, or better yet what messages our bodies are sending us.  Listening to our bodies is key to both learning and healing.

 

Cravings show up for different reasons.  Both when we are experiencing nutritional deficiencies and triggered or experiencing different emotions.  Tapping into these cravings begins the journey of connecting the mind and body and the healing process. 

 

Here's a breakdown of 3 common food cravings and what they mean both physically and emotionally.

 

Sweets: When we crave sweets it's generally due to blood sugar imbalances, magnesium deficiencies, and low energy.  Emotionally it stems from a lack of joy, love, and sadness.  That's why it's so common to reach for chocolate, which releases serotonin, a mood-boosting hormone. However, that temporary high from sugar is generally followed by a serious drop, which leads to reaching for another sugary snack and begins an addictive cycle.

Instead, opt for a healthy snack like fresh fruit or dark chocolate. Consider filling yourself up by spending time with a friend or loved one, taking a long walk or exercise class, or igniting a new passion.  These all boost serotonin, but have long term effects as opposed to short term. 

 

Salt: If you find yourself craving salt, like chips or popcorn, this may signify iodine deficiencies and high stress levels.  Instead of downing a bag of chips, opt for foods rich in Vitamin B such as nuts, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Try meditation and deep breathing exercises for optimal ways to help reduce stress long term.  

 

Fat: Some fat in our diets is essential for good health, but when you're reaching for an abundance of fatty foods like fried foods for example, you may be experiencing calcium deficiencies, a feeling of loss, or lack of self worth. Instead, choose healthy fats found in flax and chia seeds, walnuts, and extra virgin olive oil. Consider journaling as a powerful tool for boosting self-confidence and other life-changing transformations.
